Three steps, end to end.

  1. Original purchase

You bought a diamond from us

Anywhere from a week ago to five years ago. We have the order on file; the GIA paperwork is in your records.

  2. Trade-up email

    You email trade-up@luxegemsco.com

Tell us what you're trading in and what you'd like to trade up to. We book an intake at us (or arrange insured mail-in) within a week.

  3. Reconciliation

We apply 100% toward the new piece

Original price applies as credit against a new diamond worth at least twice the original. You pay the difference. The setting is repurposed at internal cost, or returned to you.

What qualifies

Five checks at intake.

  • Originally purchased from Luxe Gems

We trade up diamonds we sold. Stones from other jewelers can be evaluated for outright trade-in, but the 100% credit promise is for our own pieces.

  • GIA-certified (or other reputable lab)

Every diamond we sell ships with its original lab cert. We need that cert at intake. It's how we verify the stone is the one on the invoice.

  • Within five years of purchase

Five-year window from invoice date. After five years, we still buy back, but the 100%-credit guarantee no longer applies.

  • Original condition, no significant damage

Normal wear (small abrasions, light surface marks) is fine. Chips, fractures, or re-cuts disqualify the stone from full credit; we re-evaluate fairly at intake.

  • Original cert paperwork available

If the cert is lost, GIA can reissue from the laser inscription for around $100. We can help arrange this before intake.

Common questions

The answers you actually need.

Why does the new piece have to be worth at least 2x?

The 2x rule is what makes the math honest. If the new piece were priced at the original, we'd be giving away the diamond, which means we'd have to raise our retail across the board to fund the program. Doubling means the program is a path to bigger stones, not a discount loop. Most customers trade up after a meaningful milestone (five- or ten-year anniversaries) and have a bigger budget by then.

What happens to my original setting?

Two options. If you're trading up to a new ring, we can melt the original setting and roll the metal into the new piece at internal cost. The accent stones come out and get reset, or returned to you, depending on the new design.

If you'd rather keep the original setting (some people repurpose it as a pendant or a right-hand ring), we return it to you intact.

Lab-grown or natural: does it matter?

It does not. The program applies to any GIA-certified diamond (natural, lab-grown, fancy color) we sold you. The 100% credit is based on the original invoice price.

What if the diamond has chips or damage?

We re-evaluate at intake. Surface marks and prong scratches don't change the credit. A chip, fracture, or visible damage that would require a re-cut reduces the credit by the cost of re-cutting plus the carat weight lost. We quote the adjusted credit in writing before you commit to the trade.

What happens after five years?

The 100%-credit guarantee ends at five years. After that, we still buy back diamonds we sold, at fair-market secondhand value (typically 50 to 70 percent of original, depending on the stone). The five-year rule is what lets us guarantee the full credit; secondary-market prices move too much beyond that window.

Can I trade up more than once?

Yes. Each new piece resets its own five-year window. Trade-up is recursive. A customer who bought a one-carat in 2023 and traded up to a 2.2 in 2026 can trade that 2.2 toward a four-plus by 2031.

Can I mail it in?

Yes. We send a pre-paid, fully insured FedEx label. The diamond ships to us, we inspect, photograph, and email a written intake report within two business days. New-piece consultation happens over video call or email.

Does this apply to gemstones (sapphires, emeralds)?

Currently, the 100% trade-up applies to diamonds only. Colored gemstones we sold are eligible for trade-in at fair market value toward any new piece. We're studying whether to extend the full program to colored stones in 2027.
